Sensory Friendly Shows at the Des Moines Playhouse

Have you ever wanted to enjoy a show, but worried that the sights and sounds might be too much?

For some people, a trip to the theatre can feel hard. Loud music, bright lights, a dark room, or a long show may cause stress. This can make it harder to take part in fun events with family and friends.

The Des Moines Playhouse is helping make theatre more open to everyone with sensory-friendly shows.

A More Welcoming Theatre

A sensory-friendly show is a live theatre show with changes that can make the space more calm and easy to enjoy. These shows are made for people who may find a regular theatre show too much. This may include people with autism, sensory needs, or other needs that can affect how they take part.

At these shows, the sound is lower and loud sounds are cut back. Bright or flashing lights are not used. The house lights stay on at a low level instead of going all the way dark. Doors stay open so guests can step out to the lobby or a quiet space.

Guests can also move around, make sounds, use a fidget, or wear headphones. There is no need to sit still or stay quiet. Staff, volunteers, and actors are there to help and support guests.

Know What to Expect

A new place can be easier when you know what will happen. The Playhouse offers social stories and visual plans that families can look at before the show. These tools can help people learn what the theatre looks like and what they can expect.

Quiet spaces with calming tools are also available. Some shows may have a shorter run time or a break to help guests stay calm and enjoy the show.

The 2026–27 season has three sensory-friendly shows:

  • Junie B Jones in Boo… and I Mean It! — October 25, 2026
  • Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress — January 17, 2027
  • The Legend of Rock Paper Scissors — May 16, 2027

All three shows start at 4:00 p.m.

Why Access Matters

Being part of a community means more than getting into a building. It means having a fair chance to enjoy events, meet others, learn new things, and have fun.

For a child who has not felt ready for the theatre, a sensory-friendly show may offer a first step. A family can enjoy a show together without the same worry about noise, lights, or having to sit still.

The Playhouse also offers audio description, ASL support with advance notice, a hearing loop, and listening devices.
